Atari 2600 version of Breakout.
Played: April 2011
Played before: Yes.
Heard of before: Yes.
Time spent: More than 24 hours if you count the spinoffs.
Completed: No. Not in any incarnation.
Mastered (0-100%): 60%
Used platform: Various. I had the spin-off Arkanoid for the game boy, and played another spin-off dx-ball game for the pc. I have also played it online several times. My neighbour had a version for win 3.11, which i also spent some hours on.. I ended up downloading the rom for various emulators. As it turns out however, not even the very old Atari version of this game is that similar to the original. Additionally the original uses a trackball for input. Something I never got to use playing breakout style games. I ended up playing super breakout on MAME, which controlled horribly. However i got a nice feel for the colours and sounds.
Brief description: Singleplayer pong. Prevent the ball from dumping into the abyss, and smash the blocks above you. Very intuitive.
Story: 1/10 No story. Not until Arkanoid came along.
Gameplay: 7/10 Intuitive, but not as inventive as Pong.
Sound: 5/10 Basic basic basic.
Graphics: 7/10 Everybody likes coloured bricks. It's LEGO!
Epic win: Managing to get the ball with a small pad.
Epic fail: Losing it with the standard pad.
Moment of strongest impact: Hearing the sound of losing a ball in the MAME version. It really brought me back to the days of the simple sounds, where you knew that a low note meant you'd just been owned.
Overall: 64%
Something about this reminds me of solitaire.
