0009 - Galaxian (1979)

Played: Spring 2011
Played before: No
Heard of before: No
Time spent: 8-10 hours
Completed: Not possible
Mastered (0-100%): 30% I have a lot to learn.

Used platform: Mame. I could not find this as a working arcade machine, and decided Mame was the next best choice.

Brief description: You are a spaceship, as almost everybody apparently was in the golden days of the arcades. You have to defend the earth against a formation of aliens, who occasionally swoop down towards you. Level x+1 is identical to level x, but the enemies become progressively more aggressive as the game progresses. You are only allowed to have one shot on the screen, a feature that encourages strategic playing.
Story: 5/10 No story, only aliens.
Gameplay: 7/10 While apparently shallow, this game has a lot to offer. The diving enemies are worth more points than the ones in formation, but are also much more dangerous. This, and other small subtleties makes the game worth your time.
Sound: 5/10 Ok sounds, kick-ass explosion when you die.
Graphics: 7/10 Not that major. However, this apparently was the first game in full color. That is something, no matter how you put it.

Epic win: Breaking 10.000 points.
Epic fail: Finding out the world record for this game is more that 1.7 million points.
Moment of strongest impact: Realizing that I really got better at this game.

Overall: 70%
This game got me, but I think I'll enjoy the likes of Galaga even more.
