0011 - Battle Zone (1980)

Played: Summer 2011
Played before: No
Heard of before: No
Time spent: 1-2 hours
Completed: Not possible
Mastered (0-100%): 10%

Used platform: This can be played in a flash version on Atari's home page for free.

Brief description: You control a tank, apparently one with a fixed turret, and must make your way through a never ending wave of enemies, who spawn one at a time, as soon as you take one at a time. You are thus never outnumbered and in principle never outgunned. This means that with skill, you should be able to play this game forever. The game is laid out in beautiful 3D vector graphics, that makes this game really pleasing to the eye. I can only imagine how this must have looked to people when it came out. This is a time just after colors had made their way into gaming, and this must have looked impossibly realistic. Being beautiful for its time, I miss the ability to turn the turret while you drive, as this would have made the gameplay as groundbreaking as the graphics.
Story: 5/10 None. Hope to get a game with a story soon.
Gameplay: 6/10 Kind of cool. Throw in a movable turret, and you would've got me.
Sound: 5/10 The tank hums like a kitten, however the volcano in the distance is inaudible. A bit odd...
Graphics: 9/10 Mind blowing in 1980.

Epic win: Dodging a bullet in a last second save.
Epic fail: Dodging the wrong way, reversing into a bullet.
Moment of strongest impact: Seeing the graphics.

Overall: 68%
The lack of variation, and the basic control scheme makes this game less enjoyable than it could have been. However the move into 3D is major no matter how you put it.
