0012 - Defender (1980)

Played: Summer 2011
Played before: Yes
Heard of before: I was not aware that I had played this before, until I played it.
Time spent: 15-20
Completed: Not possible
Mastered (0-100%): 8% probably

Used platform: I tried this on mame, in a local arcade, and actually had this game for the VIC-20 back in the day.

Brief description: Hovering over a Mars-like planet being attacked by aliens, your job is to protect all humans. Your ship can move in all directions on the two dimensional side viewed playing area,  you use buttons for throttle, turning around, firing your laser and bombs. This makes for a pretty unusual control scheme, that nevertheless works after a bit of getting used to. The aliens spawn at the beginning of each level and after every player re spawn you advance by clearing a stage of enemies, while keeping at least one human alive. The game play is fast and difficult, with different types of enemies showing radically different behaviour. The first level is kind of hard at first, but you get used to it. However, I never made it past level 4. This is truly a game that has to be mastered, not just defeated.
Story: 5/10 None. No text baby.
Gameplay: 7/10 Fast and difficult.
Sound: 5/10 Nice sounds, but the sounds were never what made this game a classic.
Graphics: 7/10 Pixel graphics, but there are some nice colours.

Epic win: Hitting that new enemy-type in high speed with a single shot.
Epic fail: Realizing that same new enemy type bursted into a lot of tiny suicidal bombs, immediately crashing into your ship.
Moment of strongest impact: Realizing I had played this already, only just 15 years ago in my old room.

Overall: 70%
This is hard and fair at the same time, however the game never truly grips me.
